As tooth structures wear down with age, the physical properties
of our bite (occlusion) changes simultaneously. Natural resting and biting
positions can become detrimental to our health if left
untreated. Headaches, migraines, jaw pain, and neck pain
can result from abnormal occlusion.
Likewise, bite collapse can increase
wear and tear on anterior tooth structures, change facial
features, make smiling difficult, and even cause us to look
older than our real age. Genetics may also play a role in
how the teeth, gums, and jaws come together.
Overcoming Genetics in Dentistry
Our 30+ year old patient had the
beginning stages of dental problems that typically don't occur until a person
is in their late forties or
fifties.
As
can be seen in the first two photographs, our patient had an
extremely gummy smile and small teeth. Multiple diastemas (gaps) are also
seen on the front upper
teeth. The wear evident on his teeth
was very significant, causing fractures of his back teeth and
inability
to find a proper biting position.
